Olaha Manh Duc: Why a Three Kingdoms Joke Is Hiding Vietnam's Fourth Naturalization Case

On September 18, at the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Justice, a decision by the President placed Michael Olaha on Vietnam's citizenship register under the name Olaha Manh Duc. Within hours, most of what circulated online was not about the 29-year-old striker, 1m86 tall. It was about Cao Cao. Manh Duc is Cao Cao's courtesy name in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and fans immediately paired him with Khong Minh Gia Bao, his teammate at Cong An Ho Chi Minh City. The V.League's Three Kingdoms collection, half-jokingly, had just reached full size.

I read every one of those comments, then went back to the actual reason. Olaha chose Manh Duc because it sounds close to Michael, and because of two close friends from Song Lam Nghe An: Pham Xuan Manh and Phan Van Duc. Manh. Duc. Put together. There is no Cao Cao in it.

The joke ends there. The football story just opened, and it is bigger than a name.

191 Matches and a Registration Slot Nobody Mentions

A beer hall taught me to read matches; a team sheet only distracts me. I learned that in the seasons when Song Lam Nghe An still played through Olaha.

Meanwhile, another door is opening. Williams Minh Hoang, a Vietnamese-heritage striker, was called up for the 2026 ASEAN Cup under coach Kim Sang Sik. Olaha was not. In the same period, two players from two different legal routes, one called, one left out. Vietnamese football is running two channels at once: naturalizing foreigners who have already proven themselves in the V.League, and pulling back heritage players born abroad.

The club side is where the real story is. Cong An Ho Chi Minh City did not buy Olaha in the ordinary sense. It is the party that facilitated his naturalization. That is an investment that never appears on a price tag: legal costs, residency management, registration planning. The payoff only arrives if the player is called up, or if he becomes a domestic slot and frees an import place. It is cheaper than buying new, and it turns naturalization into a club-level strategy rather than a purely federation matter.

The Three Kingdoms joke has a side effect. It fixes Olaha's public identity before he has played a single minute for the national team. A player who walks on with a comic nickname gets watched more closely and compared faster with naturalized forwards who have already scored. That pressure is small, but it is real. My own tracking across seasons shows that naturalized players who succeed in the V.League first establish themselves at club level and only then get called up. There is almost no shortcut.
