A VND150,000 Ticket, 27,000 Seats And Vietnam's Three-Matches-In-Seven-Days Trap

At noon on August 12, I sat in a small café on Nguyen Hue Street in Saigon, rereading the ticket prices the Indonesian Football Association had just published on kitagaruda.id. A 100,000 IDR ticket — roughly VND150,000 — covers both matches on the same matchday. My friend beside me, who runs football tours, put down his glass: "At that price, everyone back home will go." I didn't argue. But in my head, the number 27,000 appeared before the number 150,000.

Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung holds 27,000 seats. That is where Vietnam plays two of its three group matches. And that is the number that decides the entire story about tickets, about supporters, and about how FIFA is building this tournament.

VND150,000 can remove the cost barrier, but 27,000 seats are the real barrier.

This is the first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup. Fourteen teams, split into two tiers. Tier one has eight teams playing in Indonesia: Group A contains hosts Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Bangladesh; Group B contains Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Pakistan. Tier two has six teams playing in Hong Kong, with the composition not specified in the official notice.

The group stage is a single round-robin. Each group winner reaches the final on October 5. The two runners-up play a third-place match the same day. On the final group matchday, October 2, both groups kick off simultaneously.

Vietnam's schedule: the Philippines on September 26, Thailand on September 29, Pakistan on October 2. Three matches in seven days. Reach the final and a fourth falls on October 5 — four matches in ten days.

The tournament sits inside a consolidated FIFA Days window from September 21 to October 6. This is the biggest structural change since the international calendar was split into separate September and October windows. V.League clubs must release players for three continuous weeks instead of two short blocks.

Prize money: the tier-one champion receives USD1,000,000, around VND26 billion. The tier-two champion receives USD300,000. Every participating team, regardless of results, receives a minimum of USD125,000 — about VND3.25 billion.

The ticket pricing is a demand-elasticity map of Southeast Asian football, published in advance.

In Jakarta, where Indonesia plays three home matches, organisers apply four price tiers. Against Singapore on September 25 and Bangladesh on October 1: 100,000, 200,000, 300,000 and 500,000 IDR. The Malaysia match on September 28 is pushed to 150,000, 300,000, 400,000 and 600,000 IDR — 20 to 50 percent higher at every tier. That is how you price the most anticipated derby of the group stage, entirely rational given the history.

In Bandung, every match not involving Indonesia carries a single flat price: 100,000 IDR. On the final group matchday, October 2, it is a flat 200,000 IDR.

The gap between the two pricing methods tells the whole story. Where the host plays, organisers segment the audience by wallet. Where two neutral teams meet, they sell one price to fill seats.

Vietnam and Thailand share Group B. These are the two highest-rated sides in the region, and both play in a 27,000-seat stadium. Maximum ticket sales per matchday in Bandung — two matches, full house — bring in around 2.7 billion IDR, about USD160,000. Across all three Bandung matchdays, the figure lands near USD640,000.

Indonesia's three home dates at Gelora Bung Karno, capacity 77,193, could generate an estimated USD3 to 4 million if sold out.

A VND150,000 ticket for two international matches sits far below European and AFC norms. That means the tournament's revenue must come from broadcast rights and sponsorship, not the turnstiles. The competition depends on FIFA's central commercial machinery — and that is why the FIFA name is attached to the tournament.

The most important point in the announcement is not the ticket price, but that FIFA, not the AFF, is named as organiser.

If accurate, commercial rights, disciplinary codes and the competition's legal framework shift from the regional body to FIFA. That is a bigger event than any ticket figure listed.

For Vietnam, the draw puts Thailand in the same group. The hosts' Group A contains no side of comparable standing. Indonesia's path to the final is lighter on paper. With eight teams in two groups of four, every group match is a six-pointer. One slip can eliminate a contender.

On October 2, the final matchday, both groups kick off simultaneously. Vietnam's fate is compressed into a single 90-minute window.

There is one detail in the notice few have noticed: organisers state Group B plays at Si Jalak Harupat in Bandung, yet also schedule Vietnam against Pakistan on October 2 at Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta.

The two venues are roughly 150 km apart. Bandung sits at 700 to 800 metres, cooler and wetter than coastal Jakarta. If Vietnam truly has to relocate mid-tournament, that means a changed pitch, changed climate and changed recovery rhythm. If not, the notice is geographically wrong.

Both readings cannot be fully true. This is data that must be verified before any travel plan is drawn up.

The second blind spot lies in away tickets. Vietnamese supporters must buy through kitagaruda.id — a platform controlled by the host federation — or purchase in person at the stadium with a passport. No away allocation quota has been published.

That means the host federation captures both the transaction and the fan data, with no committed block of seats for Vietnamese supporters. With a 27,000-seat stadium and a flat, non-tiered price, if demand from Vietnam and Thailand exceeds capacity, the only scarcity signal will appear on the secondary market. Black-market tickets become the true measure of demand.

Financially, USD125,000 per participating team is meaningful for smaller federations, but only a partial cost offset for the Vietnam Football Federation. A three-week camp from September 21 to October 6 — travel, accommodation, coaching staff, preparation friendlies — will consume much of it. This is not a profit centre.

And the biggest risk is not tactical. Three matches in seven days, four in ten, in late-September tropical conditions, with a squad just out of its domestic season. Soft-tissue injury probability rises sharply, and no tactical adjustment fully neutralises it.

Vietnam's biggest trap at this tournament lies in the schedule, not the opponents.

The hardest fixture — against Thailand — falls on September 29, only two days after the Philippines match. The coaching staff will need a usable pool of 18 to 20 players, not a settled eleven. Rotation becomes a near-certainty, not a choice.

In the summer of 2026, I had no recorder, only a blog and nerve. I sat counting 67 loan deals and realised that what gets officially published is only the tip. It is the same in Bandung. The ticket price list is the tip. The submerged part is capacity, the fixture grid, the three-week window, and FIFA taking over a commercial property the AFF spent three decades building.

A career's luck does not come from being on time, but from being in the right place — and daring to stay longer than anyone else. I will watch two things in the coming weeks: official confirmation of the venue for the October 2 match, and how the VFF negotiates with V.League clubs over a three-week release.

If Vietnam misses the October 5 final, domestic media will call it regression. But a four-team group decided by three matches, with Thailand in it, is a high-variance event. Looking into the players' eyes before the final training session in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, I will know whether this team is preparing for a long race, or just for one match.
